I rode a 6.5 mile ride out at Wilder Ranch Yesterday. I climbed from about sea level to about 600 feet elevation over the course of two miles, with a majority of the climbing confined to short, very steep sections. I started down the other leg of the loop, saw how bad the trail was torn up from the rain, and turned around and rode back. I learned a few things.
Rode 3.5 miles today. It's my short loop, but has lots of climbing. A good work out. Looks like the weather will hold this weekend, so I get to hit the trails again! :)
I went up to Wilder today. Again my friend flaked out on me. She's got a good excuse thought. Anyway, I rode up another trail this time. One I'd never been on. It began as a STEEP climb. About half way up the was a short flat and I stopped. It was taking to much effort to go up. I spin the wheels to check them and the rear is tough to turn (No wonder the climb took so much out of me!). I realize the brake rotor is dragging on one of the brake pads. I used the multi-tool my folks bought me for x-mas to realign the caliper (Very simple) and begin to climb again. I clean a section that was heavily rutted from the rains this past week. After that it go REAL steep. I down shift and begin to mash my way up. It's at that point that the bike begins ghost shifting and jumping between two gears seemingly at random. The rear time begins to rub the frame to. I bail off and push the bike to the to afraid I had bent the axle. Nope. Apparently a stick had tripped the quick release, allowing the axel some wiggle room. Torque from cranking had wiggled the wheel and caused the wheel to rub. I straightened it out and finished the ride without problem.
I went for my 5 mile loop yesterday. I road the Trek. I broke a spoke on the rear wheel. I'm thinking they may be fatigues, and I should maybe take the wheel apart and replace them all. Anyway, As I was replacing the spoke another cyclist stopped to ask if I needed anything. I told him no, but thanks. It's always nice when people do things like that. I got back on and peddled like a mad man to get home. I tied my best time ever on the loop. I felt like I was going to puke because I pushed myself so hard. Spoke fixed tonight. Going to ride this weekend if the rain lets up.
